double your pleasure.

i’ve heard many tales of stop & shop and their magical coupon doublers, but i never thought i would have the opportunity experience the greatness in this barren stop & shopless territory.  well, it looks like everything these days is going all crazy-town, because not only is rite aid doing their own take on extrabucks with their +up program (what!?), but my shaw’s circular this weekend (the junkmail version- NOT the one you can pick up in the store) had 4 very special dollar doubler coupons attached. i am SO feeling the magic this weekend. shaw’s doubles most manufacturer’s coupons up to $.99, which is great and all… but these four babies let me double $1.00 value coupons, for awesome and totally unheard of savings. coupled with a couple of sweet weekly sales, i felt a little like i won the coupon olympics today. my best scores:

cheerios & lucky charms @ 2/$4 coupons.com has a bunch of killer $.55/1 coupons right now, doubling to make each box cost exactly $.90. 6 boxes= $5.40

hood frozen tangy frozen yogurt @ $2.99 with yet another dollar doubler was only $.99.

arm & hammer detergent @ $5.29/1 was on bogo. i used one of my dollar doublers to get 2 bottles for $3.29 (or $1.65 each).

i also used my remaining 2 doublers to score a few products that never really go on sale:

paul newman frozen pizza @ $5.99/1 became almost reasonable at $3.99.

morningstar chicken fingers $4.29 became walmart cheap at $2.29.

of course then i splurged a little on 1.5 lbs. of cherries @ $3.99/lb. but they are stunningly fresh, and much like fiddleheads, one of the more transient pleasures of summer. (why save if you can’t eventually spend on the things that make life worth living?)

i wrapped up the whole grocery adventure in a $5/$50 that i got in the mail a few weeks ago, and got the whole lot (roughly $60+ worth of food) for $28. not free, but i was able to get what i wanted, and stock up on some things that i needed for $2 under my weekly grocery budget. in my world (as a girl who used to spend $80 a week on foodstuffs), it feels like definite progress.

however, a lingering question still remains: WHERE IS THE FUCKING WACKY MAC?! please stop advertising it in my local circular (especially if there are coupons available to make it FREE you teasing whore!), if it doesn’t actually exist in the state of maine. i have looked up and down every aisle in at least 3 different stores in southern maine. if anyone out there in the universe knows where i can find it, please give me a holler. and soon. before i start wrecking up the joint.

Haha! I got my paws on some of the dollar doublers too (thanks mom and dad!), and we also purchased a Newman’s Own pizza. Shaws is mixing it up a bit, that saucy temptress.

it was nice to be able to allow myself some of the things i love to eat and not feel like shaw’s was robbing me at gunpoint while doing it. $4.29 for fake chicken? i’m outraged!

Oh yeah, and we found ourselves at your Rite Aid the other night. I didn’t think it was so bad until we were leaving and I was pretty sure we were going to get carjacked. And inside, there was a sign above a bunch of beach balls that said “playballs.” Like, as opposed to the more serious workballs? Hmm…

the store itself is actually way better/nice than the west end rite aid (i actually debated a couple of friends this weekend about which one was sketchier- it’s a close race), it’s the clientèle that are an issue. india street gets way sketchy after 5 pm (due in large part to it’s proximity to the “dry out center” where you go when you’re too wasted for the homeless shelter), so it’s best to visit in pairs or groups. and whatever you do, don’t go behind the east end rite aid after dark. that’s where the action happens, and i’m pretty sure you don’t want in on that action.

Are the Lucky Charms for you? Last time I checked they use gelatin in the marshmallows 😦
Btw one time when I was babysitting I ate like, 90% of the marshmallows out of their box of Lucky Charms. I just couldn’t stop…

no no, the lucky charms are for the boyfriend. although i had secretly been hoping that the marshmallows were so dried up and reconstituted that they wouldn’t need gelatin… but it’s all a sham, a goddamn gelatin sham. shit tastes GOOD. like astronaut food good.

In both stores they are in the pasta section on the bottom shelf…I almost missed them myself because they are on the bottom. Good luck on your Wacky Mac Quest!!

Wacky Mac is on the very bottom shelf of the plain old pasta aisle. Only 2 spots for it, so it’s often sold out due to the awesome coupons. But, it’s been in every Shaws I have been in between Maine and NH.

Good luck!

i definitely looked in the bagged pasta section before, so maybe it was just sold out. although i didn’t see a shelf tag… sounds like i need to stay the course and keep lookin!

no need to feel shame! i shop there too (and i even watched the high cost of the low price). i do feel conflicted about it sometimes, but it’s so cheap!

The elusive Fucking Wacky Mac (FWM) can be had at Shaw’s, Augusta, too – but not in all varieties – for $0.99/bag.

thanks for the tip on the FWM (which will be its name henceforth). i still haven’t found any in the portland area, but i’ll keep looking! augusta is my hometown- i’m assuming that you name (augusta1961) indicates that you still live there? i just had brunch at the senator last weekend. total acid flashback to my youth!

If you go to the Shaw’s Northgate they have Wacky-Mac. I bought it a few weeks ago when it was 0.99, they too had it in the pasta isle on the bottom shelf and also at the end of the pasta isle on the end cap.

maybe i have incurable wacky mac blindness or something, because everyone else is finding it but me! thanks for the tip 🙂
